Elodie agrees to the marriage to help their impoverished people. Upon arriving in Aurea, Elodie and Henry initially seem uninterested in each other but begin to bond as they share a desire to travel. During an ancient ritual in the mountains, Isabelle reveals the pact between the first king and the dragon: he sacrificed his three daughters for peace. In a shocking twist, Henry throws Elodie down a chasm during the ritual, revealing that she is the actual sacrifice. Elodie survives the fall, escapes the dragon, and discovers an illuminated cave filled with glowing slugs that become her light source. She follows a map carved into the wall, uncovering the truth behind the royal sacrifices and the dead dragon hatchlings. A rescue party led by Lord Bayford arrives, but the distraction allows Elodie to escape the mountain.
